Breast Reduction / Reduction Mammaplasty

Problem:

  • Large breasts that cause physical pain and discomfort in the neck, back and shoulders
  • Large breasts that impair or restrict physical activity
  • Enlarged areolas (pigmented skin surrounding the nipples) caused by the stretched skin of large breasts
  • Self conscious about disproportionately large breasts
  • Abnormally large breasts in men:  see Gynecomastia

Solution:

Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammaplasty, removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to achieve a breast size in better proportion to a woman’s body. It may also reposition and reduce the size of the areolas that may result from stretching of the skin over time. Under a general anesthesia, breast reduction is most commonly performed through incisions, the pattern of which are dictated by the amount of tissue and skin to be removed and the quality of skin elasticity. Underlying breast tissue is reduced, lifted and shaped. Most incision lines are concealed in the natural breast contours; however, some are visible on the breast surface. Although permanent, incision lines and scars usually fade and improve over time. Breast reduction is generally considered a reconstructive procedure and may be covered by health insurance.

Result:

  • Smaller, better proportioned breasts
  • Alleviate discomfort of large breasts
  • Enhanced body image and self confidence
